Time ranks the city of Berat in fourth place as the most unique destination for 2023

TIME magazine has just published its 2023 annual list of the most unique and original places in the world, ranking the city of Berat in fourth place.

The magazine says:

The Albanian city of Berat was a place of refuge for the country’s Jews during World War II and, unusually, where the country’s Jewish population grew during the conflict. Exceptional hospitality is still the key to local culture, says TIME, reflecting the article with a photo of the old bridge of Gorica and the two old neighbourhoods of Gorica and Mangalem.

In its article, the CNN travel newspaper explains where, why and what is behind her choices.

Nominiations came from TIME’s international network of correspondents and contributors, who were then vetted by the publication’s editors Emma Barker Bonomo, senior editor at TIME, tells CNN Travel.

“The list we chose reflects some of the biggest trends in travel: sustainability and authenticity. Many locations on this list are finding ways to allow tourists to visit with a limited environmental impact. And many destinations have responded to travellers’ desire for unique local experiences by offering indigenous-led tours or homestays.”

In recent years, Berat has become a fantastic destination for experimental and natural tourism. Tourists visiting Berat have the opportunity to visit villages on the sacred mountain of Tomori, go rafting and explore the canyons of Osum, attend cooking classes and enjoy food and wine in the best wineries and in the homes of local residents. Nowadays, tourists are more eager for nature and adventure above all to see and feel the original way of culinary and cultural traditions of the country where they step.”
